CONSIDER THIS:
When we hear the word inheritance, we often think about money, property, businesses, insurance, or possessions.
Those things matter.
- But what happens when a generation inherits resources without identity?
- What happens when young people know what the family owns but don’t understand what the family stands for?
- What if one of the greatest things we can transfer to the next generation is not simply wealth—but a strong enough sense of identity to steward whatever they receive?
MY RESPONSE IS MINE
I cannot determine every challenge the next generation will face.
- Their world will be different from mine.
- Technology will change.
- Careers will change.
- Culture will change.
- The economy will change.
But I can help give them something portable:
- A foundation.
I can help them understand:
You have value before achievement.
- You can learn.
- You can recover from mistakes.
- You can ask for help.
- You can think critically.
- You can manage resources.
- You can treat people with dignity.
- You can develop your gifts without believing you have to become somebody else.
That is identity-building.
TODAY MATTERS
Young people do not learn only from what we intentionally teach.
They also learn from what they repeatedly observe.
- How do we talk about ourselves?
- How do we respond when things go wrong?
- How do we handle money?
- How do we treat people who cannot do anything for us?
- Do we apologize?
- Do we keep our word?
- Do we rest?
- Do we constantly criticize ourselves and then tell them to be confident?
The lesson and the model must eventually meet.
Today gives us another opportunity to make them meet.
KEEPING HOPE
Perhaps you did not receive this kind of foundation.
That does not mean you cannot help create it.
Generational transformation often begins when one person becomes aware enough to say:
“This pattern stops being automatic with me.”
You do not have to know everything.
You don’t have to pretend to be the expert in every area of their lives.
- Be present.
- Ask questions.
- Listen.
- Encourage their strengths.
- Create room for curiosity.
And when expertise is needed, help them find trustworthy people who can provide it.
That is wisdom too.
DOING GOOD THINGS
Imagine a generation that receives both roots and wings.
Roots strong enough to know:
I know who I am.
And wings strong enough to say:
I can become, build, contribute, and serve without abandoning myself.
- That changes education.
- It changes entrepreneurship.
- It changes relationships.
- It changes financial decisions.
- It changes communities.
Perhaps that is one of the greatest forms of legacy:
Not creating a generation dependent upon our answers but helping develop a generation capable of thinking, discerning, learning, stewarding, and rising.
